Essex cricket chairman Anu Mohindru resigns after CV scandal

Essex County Cricket Club’s chairman has stepped down from his position following revelations that he had falsified information about his educational background. Anurag Mohindru, a criminal lawyer, was disbarred by the Barristers’ Tribunal Service after it was discovered that he fabricated his CV while applying for a senior role. Despite denying any knowledge of providing false information during the five-day hearing, Mr. Mohindru’s deception ultimately led to his resignation.

Acknowledging his “leadership and significant contribution” during his tenure, the Chelmsford-based cricket club expressed gratitude for Mr. Mohindru’s service before his departure. The board swiftly appointed Jason Gallian as the interim chair and Vicky Ford as the interim deputy chair following his resignation. Mr. Mohindru was promptly suspended after the tribunal’s ruling and was required to pay £55,000 in costs, pending any potential appeal.

The allegations against Mr. Mohindru stemmed from his application for a position at 23 Essex Street Chambers between late 2012 and early 2013. The Bar Standards Board found that he had intentionally inflated his academic achievements and qualifications to boost his prospects of securing a tenancy. Among the claims was that Mr. Mohindru had falsely stated studying biomedical science at the University of Oxford during a job interview, despite no record of such a student existing under his name. Additionally, he asserted on his CV that he had pursued medicine at the university from 1993 to 1994, further exacerbating the deceit. As a result, Mr. Mohindru was also directed to cover costs amounting to £54,780 owed to the Bar Standards Board
