Sky to cut 600 jobs in streaming expansion plans

Sky has announced plans to reduce its workforce in the UK by cutting 600 jobs, with a total of 900 roles being affected by the proposed changes. The media organization is looking to shift its focus towards its streaming services, leading to the decision to axe 600 positions. The majority of the job cuts are expected to occur at locations in Leeds, London, and Livingston, West Lothian.

In recent years, Sky has already eliminated nearly 3,000 roles, including those of engineers responsible for installing satellite dishes. Additionally, earlier this year, the company made the difficult decision to close three call centers, resulting in the loss of 2,000 jobs. This latest round of layoffs is part of Sky’s strategy to realign its efforts towards enhancing its digital and TV services, rather than developing new platforms.

Despite the significant staff reductions, Sky clarifies that these actions are not motivated by cost-cutting measures or individual performance evaluations. The broadcaster emphasizes its commitment to delivering innovative products and services to customers, such as Sky Glass, Sky Stream, and a full fiber broadband offering. By investing in digital-first solutions and exceptional content, Sky aims to provide customers with an unparalleled viewing experience powered by global innovation.

Matt Trickett, head of media at Ampere Analysis, acknowledges that restructuring initiatives can be challenging for employees, but he notes that the impact of these job cuts is relatively limited, affecting less than 5% of the overall workforce when considering redeployments. The cuts are primarily aimed at streamlining internal operations and aligning the company’s focus on the development of Sky Glass and Sky Stream TV products
