Liverpool City Council has announced a significant investment boost of £20 million for neighborhoods across the city. This funding drive aims to improve Lifestyles fitness centers, park and play areas, and the implementation of communal bin ‘hubs’.
A groundbreaking £7 million program is also included in the plan to combat homelessness by repurposing hundreds of empty homes, resulting in substantial cost savings for the Council in reducing temporary accommodation expenses. The proposal will be presented at the upcoming Cabinet meeting on Tuesday 16 September for approval as part of the council’s capital program.
The initial phase of the investment will see £5.18 million allocated towards revitalizing Lifestyles leisure centers, which will include upgrading gym equipment, reception areas, 3G pitches, and introducing adventure activities. This marks the beginning of a broader enhancement project, with a planned investment of up to £30 million by 2032, inclusive of the development of new youth hubs.
To address the homelessness crisis, £7.3 million in grants will be offered to private sector landlords to bring 365 properties back into use, with an estimated saving of £13.3 million in reduced temporary accommodation costs. Additionally, £310,000 will be utilized to establish a customer services hub that will expedite homeless household assessments, ultimately reducing unnecessary placements in temporary accommodation from the 10,000 referrals received annually
