The island, deserted by human inhabitants since 1974, is now home to a herd of cows descended from the animals once raised there.

Alexander Annal, whose family owns Swona and lives on the neighboring South Ronaldsay, was informed by local postal workers that a parcel had arrived for Swona. Curiosity piqued, Mr. Annal discovered a pair of women’s Adidas trainers inside, addressed to an unknown recipient. Bewildered by this unexpected delivery, he pondered whether it was a simple error or perhaps a more elaborate scheme.

The island of Swona is about a mile long and half a mile wide, situated in the harsh Pentland Firth between Orkney and the Scottish mainland. Accessible only by a special charter boat in the summer, the island generates some income that aids in caring for the feral cattle and abandoned houses scattered across its landscapes.

Despite lacking an internet connection, Swona received this mysterious delivery, leading Mr. Annal to question the sender’s motives. As speculations abound, concerns arise about potential scams associated with unsolicited deliveries. In light of such occurrences, Gary Foubister of Orkney Islands Council trading standards advises individuals to report any unexpected parcels to their office, ensuring that recipients are not obligated to return unsolicited items
