French authorities have reported that three people lost their lives while trying to cross the English Channel near Calais. The Prefect of Pas-de-Calais, Laurent Touvet, revealed that the victims were likely crushed at the bottom of the overloaded boat. He blamed smuggling gangs for the deaths and promised to pursue them.
Initially, it was believed that two of the deceased were children, but later reports clarified that they were “young people”, with the possibility that two of them were children. The individuals who perished were suspected to be from Egypt and South East Asia. The vessel was carrying over 70 individuals, indicating that it was overloaded.
In a separate incident at Neufchâtel-Hardelot, three people from another boat trying to cross were reported missing. Fortunately, the French navy’s patrol boat rescued a third boat with 115 occupants, marking one of the largest groups they had ever encountered. The three deceased individuals were discovered after the French maritime authorities were summoned to assist off the coast of Sangatte.
Reports suggest that over 20 individuals have died in the Channel this year alone. Since the Labour government assumed power in July 2024, more than 50,000 individuals have crossed into the UK, with over 30,000 arriving in small boats in 2025 so far.
