Gregg Wallace: Former MasterChef presenter launches legal action against BBC

Former MasterChef presenter Gregg Wallace is taking legal action against the BBC regarding a data protection issue, as per court documents submitted to the High Court. The details of the case have not been disclosed publicly as of yet. Wallace was axed in July following the affirmation of more than 40 allegations concerning his behavior on the show MasterChef.

The BBC spokesperson stated, “We have not received any formal notification of legal proceedings, therefore, we are unable to provide any comment at this time.” Wallace’s representatives have been requested for a statement. BBC News operates independently from the broader corporation.

Having hosted MasterChef for two decades, Wallace withdrew from hosting the cooking program last year amidst multiple allegations of misconduct. The show’s production company, Banijay, initiated an immediate investigation into the claims with the help of an external law firm. The subsequent report disclosed that 45 claims against Wallace were substantiated, encompassing instances of unwanted physical contact and inappropriate attire.

A total of 83 allegations were made against the TV host, mostly centered around inappropriate sexual content and remarks, as well as culturally insensitive or racist statements. Wallace contested the allegations, stating that none of the serious claims against him were proven, but he acknowledged a discrepancy in perspective regarding the issue of unwelcome physical contact. He expressed regret for any distress caused and denied any ill intentions.

Another claim, implicating Wallace’s co-host John Torode for using a highly offensive racial slur, was also upheld. While both presenters were dismissed, the BBC opted to air this year’s amateur series of MasterChef with the inclusion of Wallace and Torode to honor the chefs who participated. The BBC’s director general Tim Davie defended this decision, emphasizing that a majority of the chefs involved wanted the show to proceed. Davie also asserted a commitment to addressing power abuses within the organization.
