DUP's Gavin Robinson hits out at Michelle O'Neill after Army jobs fair row

He emphasized the importance of recognizing and representing the diverse population of Northern Ireland, not just those who align with Sinn Féin’s views. Robinson made it clear that he did not view O’Neill as a first minister for all, stating that his opinion on the matter had been consistent.

In response to the controversy surrounding the participation of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) at an event in the Foyle Arena leisure center, Sinn Féin councillor Christopher Jackson reiterated his party’s longstanding opposition to the British armed forces on Irish soil. According to Jackson, the presence of the armed forces at any council event or venue is unwelcome due to their historical negative impact on the island. On the other hand, SDLP councillor Brian Tierney suggested that there were ample alternative opportunities for individuals interested in joining the armed forces.

Despite some unionist councillors defending the armed forces’ attendance at the event, Derry and Strabane Council decided to adhere to the steer from elected members of the governance and strategic planning committee. The MoD expressed disappointment over the decision to exclude the Army from the event but ultimately accepted it.
