Children's TV favourite Bagpuss to reawaken for new film

Bagpuss, an iconic character from a beloved British children’s TV show, is gearing up to make a comeback on the big screen with a new film that transports him into the present day. Originally airing in 1974 with 13 episodes, the show followed the adventures of the pink-and-white toy cat who came to life in a shop window. Over the years, Bagpuss gained a devoted following, being dubbed the nation’s favorite children’s show in a BBC poll in 1999 and later topping a poll for the favorite children’s TV animal.

In this upcoming sequel, Bagpuss and his friends, like the woodpecker Professor Yaffle and the rag doll Madeleine, will awaken in contemporary Britain and embark on a modern-day quest. The film promises to honor the classic series’ spirit with a mix of live-action and animation, offering a new generation the chance to experience the magic of Bagpuss. The project is a collaboration with the estates of the show’s creators, Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin.

Emily Firmin, daughter of Peter Firmin and the original series’ girl, expressed her excitement for Bagpuss’s return, reminiscing on the impact the character had on her own childhood. She shared that Bagpuss was more than just a character on screen, but a friend who taught her important life lessons. The film is set to be produced by Threewise Entertainment, known for their work on Nickelodeon’s Rock Island Mysteries, and is aiming for a release date in 2027
