After nearly two decades, Jamie Borthwick, known for his role as Jay Brown on EastEnders, has been removed from the long-running BBC soap opera. Borthwick, 31, had been a fixture on Albert Square since 2006, making him one of the show’s most enduring cast members. Earlier in the year, the actor faced repercussions from the BBC after making a derogatory comment regarding people with disabilities while on the set of Strictly Come Dancing.
A spokesperson from BBC Studios confirmed Borthwick’s departure from EastEnders, stating that he will not be making a comeback to the show. The reasons behind this decision were not disclosed by the organization. BBC News has reached out to Borthwick’s representatives for a response on the matter. Reports from The Mirror suggest that Borthwick was set to resume filming for EastEnders this month after his suspension, but those plans have now been scrapped.
Following the incident on the set of Strictly Come Dancing, where Borthwick’s language was deemed inappropriate by the BBC, the actor expressed regret for any offense caused. Disability charity Scope urged Borthwick to use this as an opportunity to educate himself on the realities of disabled people’s lives.
