Geraint Thomas, the 2018 Tour de France champion and Olympic gold medallist, is set to retire at the end of the season with the final stage of the Tour of Britain taking place in Cardiff on Sunday. Thousands of cycling fans are expected to line the streets across south Wales to bid farewell to the Welsh cycling legend as he concludes his illustrious career.
The last stage of the tour, totaling 122.2km, will start at the velodrome in Newport named after Thomas and pass his childhood cycling club Maindy Flyers before culminating in his hometown. Thomas expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to finish his career on home roads, stating, “I’m just lucky the Tour of Britain comes at the end of the season so I can finish my career on home roads. It will be an amazing way to finish.”
Despite currently being in 86th position in the tour, more than 16 minutes behind the overall leader Romain Gregoire, Thomas cherished the support he received from the crowds during the emotional fifth stage between Pontypool and The Tumble. His team, Ineos Grenadiers, will don a special jersey designed by Thomas commemorating significant names, places, and victories from his career, along with a hand-drawn picture by his son.
Reflecting on his career highlights, including track gold at two Olympics and road race gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Thomas acknowledged the impact of winning the Tour de France in 2018. He also revealed discussions about potentially transitioning into a management role with Team Ineos, where he has been a pivotal member since 2010, contributing to multiple victories in prestigious cycling events over the past decade
