Rioter jailed for stoking fires at Manvers asylum hotel

A man has been sentenced to nine years in jail for his involvement in the riot outside a hotel where asylum seekers were being housed. Matthew Crossland, 32, was seen throwing wood and bricks at police and the Holiday Inn Express in Manvers, Rotherham, in August of last year. Videos showed him participating in setting fires around the building with other anti-immigration protesters. Crossland, residing in Wombwell, Barnsley, pleaded guilty to violent disorder and arson with intent to endanger life, receiving one of the harshest sentences related to the incident.

In a separate case, Jack Knight narrowly avoided imprisonment for his actions during the riot, narrowly escaping jail time. The 21-year-old was captured on video provoking officers by running a stick along their shields and hurling objects, including stones, at them. The Judge, Jeremy Richardson KC, acknowledged Knight’s difficult upbringing, which was described as troublesome in a pre-sentence report.

The Judge expressed empathy towards Knight’s challenging past, highlighting the lack of boundaries in his life and the need for structure. Despite this leniency, Knight was given a suspended 20-month sentence and ordered to attend 50 rehabilitation sessions. Judge Richardson emphasized the importance of adhering to these conditions, noting that there would be no further opportunities for leniency.
