Access to clean drinking water is set to improve for underserved Californians following the approval of a budget the state has heralded for its equity-focused water investments.
The $1.5bn funding package was agreed by governor Gavin Newsom and lawmakers in late August and will support efforts to clean up what the state calls “legacy contamination”, describing it as a matter of “environmental justice”.
The cash is part of a $2.9bn package to improve California’s water supply that also includes money for conservation, efficiency, resiliency and wastewater treatment. The legislation sets out investment priorities for the funding, including grants for low-income communities impressed by drought.
Sara Aminzadeh, who leads California’s State Water Resources Control Board, wrote on Twitter: “When we invest in clean, safe drinking water for all, we invest in the health of our families, resilience of our communities, and future of CA & our planet.”
