Madeleine McCann suspect to be released from German jail in less than three weeks

A suspect in the disappearance of British toddler Madeleine McCann, Christian Brückner, is set to be released from prison in Germany by September 17, according to local authorities. Lead prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters stated that although they believe Brückner poses a danger, legal constraints require his release from prison.

Madeleine McCann disappeared from an apartment complex in Portugal in 2007, igniting a massive Europe-wide investigation. Wolters insists that Brückner is the sole suspect in Madeleine McCann’s case, despite not having enough evidence to formally charge him. He emphasized that their investigations will persist in building a case against Brückner. Due to differing legal systems, German authorities suspect Brückner of murder, while British authorities continue to treat Madeleine’s disappearance as a missing persons case.

Brückner, a convicted sex offender, has been named as a suspect in both Portuguese and German investigations. An expert recently assessed Brückner as a danger to society, with prosecutors seeking restrictions upon his release. Authorities are considering fitting Brückner with an ankle tag to monitor his movements. Despite attempts to gather evidence, a recent search conducted by Portuguese and German police yielded no breakthroughs in the case
