Met Police special constable found guilty of sex offences

A police special constable in Buckinghamshire has been convicted of raping and sexually assaulting a child. James Bubb, now identifying as Gwyn Samuels, groomed one victim online before committing sexual assaults when she was only 12 years old. Another victim, whom Bubb met online while posing as a 16-year-old girl, was also raped by him.

Bubb began volunteering with the Met Police Central West team in September 2020 but was immediately suspended when arrested by Thames Valley Police in April 2024. Described as “a dangerous, predatory sex offender” by Detective Constable Kirsty Pendle, Bubb was also terminated from his position as a theatre technician at Harrow School. The offenses took place between January 2018 and April 2024.

During the crown court trial, it was revealed that Bubb met his first victim on an online chat site before sexually assaulting her in public shortly before her 13th birthday. Using his status as a special constable to intimidate, Bubb was found guilty of multiple offenses against the same complainant. He was also convicted of raping a second complainant with whom he had an on-off relationship starting when she turned 18.

After six hours and 32 minutes of deliberation, jurors reached their verdicts. The NSPCC expressed the importance of supporting the victims through such unsettling cases and emphasized the need for tech companies to prioritize the safety of children online. Det Sgt Catriona Cameron of Thames Valley Police highlighted the breach of trust exhibited by Bubb, who utilized his position to intimidate victims during the offenses. Bubb is scheduled to be sentenced at Aylesbury Crown Court on December 19
