The decision to reinstate major UN sanctions on Iran has been initiated by the UK, France, and Germany in response to escalating tensions surrounding Tehran’s nuclear program. These sanctions, previously lifted as part of a 2015 agreement, will be brought back under a snapback mechanism, with the potential for sanctions to be reinstated within 30 days. A warning was issued two weeks ago by the three countries, all signatories to the 2015 deal, indicating their readiness to take this action unless Iran pursued a diplomatic resolution by the end of August.
Iran’s foreign ministry has criticized the move, stating that it will negatively impact ongoing discussions with the International Atomic Energy Agency. Describing the action as provocative and unnecessary, Iran emphasized that it would respond appropriately to the sanctions being reinstated. Meanwhile, talks between Iran and the US regarding its nuclear program have stalled since June when the US launched airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites and Iran blocked UN-backed inspectors from entering its facilities.
The initial agreement in 2015 involved the lifting of long-standing economic sanctions on Iran in exchange for limitations on its nuclear activities. This move by the UK, France, and Germany to trigger the snapback provision is a result of their belief that Iran has failed to adhere to its nuclear commitments, leading to concerns about the potential threat posed by Iran’s nuclear program to global security.
Despite efforts to engage with Iran on diplomatic solutions to restore compliance with the 2015 agreement, the E3 countries have expressed disappointment in Iran’s lack of substantive actions to meet the required conditions. The US has welcomed the initiation of the snapback process and has expressed a willingness to collaborate with the E3 to see it through. It remains to be seen how the UN Security Council will respond within the 30-day window to decide whether sanctions relief should continue or be allowed to lapse
