UK summons Russian ambassador over Ukraine strikes

The UK Foreign Office has announced that Russia’s ambassador will be summoned in response to the major strikes on Kyiv carried out by Moscow overnight. Ukrainian officials reported that at least 17 people, including four children, lost their lives in the wave of attacks that hit Ukraine’s capital. The British Council’s offices were among the targets that were severely damaged during the assault.

Andrei Kelin, the Russian ambassador, is set to meet with foreign office officials upon his arrival. Foreign Secretary David Lammy confirmed the summoning of Mr Kelin in a statement, emphasizing the need for an immediate halt to the killing and destruction caused by the attacks. The British Council, known for its efforts to foster cultural relationships between the UK and other nations, stated that one of its guards was injured in the attack and is currently receiving treatment in a hospital.

Following the assault in Kyiv, the British Council’s office will be closed until further notice due to the extensive damage sustained. Despite the setback, the council expressed its commitment to continuing its collaborations with Ukrainian partners in the fields of education and culture. Lammy strongly condemned the strikes by stating that the civilian casualties and property destruction, including damage to the British Council and EU Delegation in Kyiv, were a result of Putin’s actions. The European Union has also decided to summon its Russian envoy in response to the attacks on Kyiv, with foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas denouncing Russia’s decision to escalate tensions and undermine peace efforts.

Moreover, Prime Minister Keir Starmer accused Russia of derailing any prospects for peace through its unwarranted and destructive attacks. The UK government’s firm stance against such aggression reflects the international condemnation of Russia’s actions and the urgent need for diplomatic measures to restore stability and prevent further bloodshed in the region
