Value of small packages sent from China to UK more than doubles

The data obtained by the BBC reveals a substantial increase in the value of small parcels shipped from China to the UK, soaring to £3bn last year. This surge is attributed to Chinese e-commerce giants such as Shein and Temu, fueling the demand for cheap goods among online shoppers in the UK. As a result, the UK government is contemplating reviewing the current rules that exempt imports of small packages worth £135 or less from customs duties.

These deliveries accounted for 51% of all small parcels shipped to the UK from around the world, a significant increase from 35% in the previous year. This trend has affected businesses like Sheffield-based giftware wholesaler Ancient Wisdom, which struggles to compete with the prices offered by giants like Shein and Temu.

Shein and Temu have gained popularity among UK consumers for their affordable range of products, including clothing, electronics, and toys. Despite their success, concerns have been raised regarding labor standards related to the manufacturing of products sold on their platforms. As calls for action in response to the surge in low-value imports intensify, the Treasury undertook a review in April following pressure from major retailers. The British Retail Consortium (BRC) emphasized the urgent need for action to address the threat low-value imports pose to UK High Streets and consumers.

While the US has already discontinued its exemption on low-cost imports from China, the UK continues to grapple with the challenges posed by the influx of goods. As the review of customs treatment of low-value imports remains ongoing, stakeholders are calling for measures to level the playing field for businesses and ensure consumer safety. With global policy shifts impacting the landscape of international trade, the future of small parcel imports from China to the UK remains uncertain
