Emerge: Two deaths investigated after Belfast dance festival

Following the annual Emerge dance music festival in Belfast, investigations are underway into the deaths of two young attendees. Mia Keevan, a 17-year-old from County Tipperary in the Republic of Ireland, fell ill during the event and tragically passed away shortly after being taken to the hospital. In a separate incident, 24-year-old Trae Keenan from County Down died in rented accommodation in the city center a few hours after the festival concluded. Shine Productions, the organizers of the event, have been asked for a statement regarding the incidents.

Emerge music festival, which is considered the largest dance music event in Northern Ireland, typically takes place at Boucher Playing Fields in south Belfast over the August bank holiday weekend. The festival draws in around 40,000 dance music enthusiasts each day. This year’s festival featured headline acts such as Fatboy Slim and Bicep, along with artists like Sammy Virji, Fjaak, Sonny Fodera, and Danny Howard.

In a heartbreaking turn of events, Mia was visiting Belfast from Carrick-on-Suir to attend the festival and passed away, prompting ongoing investigations into the cause of her death. Belfast district commander Supt Allister Hagan confirmed the tragic news, expressing condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. Sarah Roche, who is raising funds for Mia’s family, described the teenager as a vibrant and beloved individual who brightened the lives of those around her.

Mr. Keenan, who also attended the festival, fell ill upon his return to his rented accommodation in Belfast and subsequently passed away. The 24-year-old chef was survived by his four-month-old son, with his family expressing devastation over his untimely death. Shanice, Mr. Keenan’s sibling, shared fond memories of her brother and emphasized his positive impact within the community. Despite suffering from previous health complications, his family confirmed that his death was not related to drug use but rather stemmed from a panic attack.

Authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding both deaths at the Emerge festival and have made several arrests over the weekend. Superintendent Hagan mentioned that various organizations, including the Police Service of Northern Ireland and Belfast City Council, collaborated to ensure the festival’s safety. A total of seven arrests were made during the event for offenses such as disorderly behavior, drink-driving, assault on police, and possession of controlled substances
