Lewis Adams reports from Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court that Hadush Kebatu, a man from Ethiopia, is on trial in Essex for allegedly making inappropriate comments to two 14-year-old girls who were eating pizza in a town centre. The incident occurred on 7 July when the children, thinking he looked hungry, offered him food in Epping. Kebatu then returned the next day and reportedly asked one of the girls to kiss her friend, as per court proceedings.
Kebatu, an asylum seeker residing at The Bell Hotel in High Road, Epping, denied the two sexual offenses along with charges of inciting a girl to engage in sexual activity, attempted sexual assault, and harassment without violence. Despite giving his birth date as in December 1986, indicating he is 38, court records suggest his age is 41.
According to prosecutor Stuart Cowen, Kebatu approached the girls while they were eating pizza, made inappropriate comments, and expressed his desire to have a baby with each of them. He then invited them to The Bell Hotel, where he resided as a recent UK arrival. Despite being informed they were 14, Kebatu allegedly stated that age did not matter. The girls left the area but were approached again the next day, with one of them being in her school uniform. An uncomfortable situation ensued when Kebatu attempted inappropriate physical contact, which the prosecutor described in detail.
In a recorded police interview played in court, one of the girls described how Kebatu behaved eagerly and inappropriately towards her, claiming he wanted to make babies with her. She expressed feeling shocked and frozen in response to his advances. The trial, set to conclude on Wednesday, paints a troubling picture of the events that unfolded in Epping involving Hadush Kebatu and the ensuing protests outside The Bell Hotel
