Transport for London (TfL) has launched a campaign aimed at addressing the “disruptive behavior” exhibited by passengers who listen to music or make calls using their mobile phone’s loudspeakers. The campaign comes in response to a recent survey conducted by TfL, which found that 70% of 1,000 passengers considered such behavior to be a nuisance. Posters encouraging the use of headphones or hands-free kits will be displayed on the Elizabeth line starting Tuesday and will be rolled out to other services in the autumn.
Commuters in London have expressed support for TfL’s initiative to curb loudspeaker noise on public transport. Many passengers believe that playing music out loud is impolite and disruptive to others, especially during the morning rush hour. Some commuters shared their experiences of encountering individuals who play loud music without regard for others’ preferences or comfort. TfL’s customer director, Emma Strain, emphasized that playing music out loud without permission is prohibited by TfL by-laws and enforcement officers have the authority to take action against offenders.
For individuals with heightened sensitivity, such as those with autism, loudspeaker noise can be particularly distressing. TfL’s new campaign will be accompanied by Instagram posts and reminders for passengers to be considerate of others, including looking up from their screens to see if anyone requires their seat more than they do. In a related incident in France, a man was fined for making a call on loudspeaker in a designated quiet area of a train station. The French Transport Code prohibits disturbance of the peace of others through noise in public transport areas, and fines can be imposed on violators. With the expanding 4G and 5G coverage on the London Tube network, TfL is working to ensure that passengers continue to have a pleasant and peaceful journey without being subjected to disruptive loudspeaker noise
