Notting Hill Carnival 2025 begins with burst of colour

The vibrant Notting Hill Carnival children’s parade commenced on Sunday morning, flooding the streets of west London with bursts of color and music. Musicians and dancers in their vivid costumes paraded through the streets, marking the start of Europe’s largest street party. The day commenced with J’ouvert at 06:00 BST, where revelers gathered ahead of the children’s parade, painting the streets with bright hues and powder. J’ouvert, translating to “daybreak” or “opening of the day” in French Creole, signifies the commencement of the Carnival festivities over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Anticipated to attract over a million attendees throughout the weekend, the Carnival continues with Sunday’s festivities featuring sound systems and live music stages. Steeped in Jamaican culture and Reggae music, Carnival organizers highlight the event’s sound system tradition. Genres such as rare groove, house, and samba are set to resonate throughout the day. Live stages are scheduled to take place in Emslie Horniman’s Pleasance Park and Powis Square from noon onwards.

Monday will see the Carnival festivities continue with the adults’ parade, alongside additional live stages and sound systems. Notably, a 72-second silence will be observed at 15:00 on both days to honor the 72 individuals who lost their lives in the Grenfell Tower fire, as well as those who have passed away during Carnival in recent years.
