Met Police arrests 100 people ahead of Notting Hill Carnival

The upcoming Notting Hill Carnival has already seen a significant police presence, with one hundred arrests leading up to the weekend event. According to the Metropolitan Police, these arrests were made in an effort to disrupt and deter individuals who pose a risk to public safety during the carnival. Additionally, 21 of those arrested have been recalled to prison, while 266 people have been given police bail or probation licence conditions prohibiting them from attending this year’s carnival.

Among the weapons seized were 11 firearms and over 40 knives, highlighting the police’s commitment to ensuring a safe environment for carnival-goers. Cmdr Charmain Brenyah emphasized that these arrests serve as a deterrent to those considering engaging in violence or criminal activities during the festivities. With millions expected to attend Europe’s largest street party, the police are taking proactive measures to prevent any incidents from occurring.

Cmdr Brenyah acknowledged that while the majority of attendees come to the carnival to have fun and celebrate Caribbean culture, a minority may have less positive intentions. Recent years have seen instances of serious violence during the event, prompting the police to prioritize the tackling of such issues. Intelligence-led interventions have targeted groups and individuals deemed to pose a high risk to the safety of others at the carnival. Live Facial Recognition technology will also be used on the approach to and from the event, as well as outside its boundaries, as an additional security measure
