TikTok is set to lay off a significant number of employees in the UK who are responsible for moderating the content on the social media platform. This move comes as TikTok plans to shift this work to its other offices in Europe, aiming to enhance its moderation capabilities through the use of artificial intelligence (AI).
A spokesperson for TikTok mentioned that this restructuring is part of an ongoing effort to streamline its global operating model for Trust and Safety. However, the Communication Workers Union (CWU) criticized the decision, accusing the company of prioritizing corporate greed over the safety of its workers and the public.
John Chadfield, the CWU National Officer for Tech, expressed concerns about the impact of replacing human moderation teams with AI solutions, labeling them as “hastily developed” and “immature.” This announcement coincided with a vote among the company’s employees on whether to recognize the union.
The affected employees mainly work in TikTok’s Trust and Safety team in London, with additional staff in similar roles in parts of Asia. Despite the layoffs, TikTok emphasized its commitment to enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of its moderation efforts through technological advancements.
