Liverpool to co-host national workshop on decarbonising culture and creativity

Liverpool’s groundbreaking efforts to decarbonize its cultural and creative sectors are setting an example for cities across the UK. As the world’s first UN Accelerator City, Liverpool has dedicated the past nine months to researching and experimenting with ways to transition its cultural sector to a net-zero future.

In collaboration with the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, Liverpool City Council is hosting an online workshop to share insights and strategies for other cities to accelerate the decarbonization of their cultural and creative sectors, including live music, events, and film and television production. This initiative is part of Liverpool’s role as the UN’s first Accelerator City for climate action through the Entertainment and Culture for Climate Action program.

Liverpool’s innovative low-carbon pilots, such as integrated event ticketing with public transport, updated land use agreements, exploration of mains power at key event and filming sites, and sustainable approaches to large-scale live music and film/TV production, serve as tangible examples for other cities looking to reduce their carbon footprint in the cultural sector.

Councillor Liam Robinson, Leader of Liverpool City Council, emphasized the importance of sharing the city’s experiences and knowledge with others to drive the transition to net zero. Liverpool’s success in hosting net-zero gigs, collaborating with film and TV production crews to decarbonize processes, and overcoming hurdles in switching to clean energy sources demonstrates the city’s commitment to leading the way in shaping the future of the cultural sector.
