An unfortunate incident occurred where a mechanic lost his life due to being crushed under a car he was attempting to work on, as revealed in an inquest. The individual in question, Daniel Burton, aged 27 and hailing from Port Talbot, was discovered unresponsive beneath a vehicle owned by his partner’s father on Southall Avenue in Skewen, Neath, on the 22nd of January. The Swansea Coroner’s Court heard that Mr. Burton resided with his partner Abbie, her daughter Maddie-Mae, and their child Benny, portraying a harmonious family environment.
The verdict of the coroner attributed Mr. Burton’s passing to an accident, with the cause being the collapse of the axle stand that was supporting the car, leading to him being trapped beneath it. Prior to the tragic incident, Mr. Burton had completed his training as a mechanic and was employed at the Port Talbot steelworks, subsequently taking voluntary redundancy. Reports also mentioned that he was on the verge of completing his MOT testers course at Bridgend College when the unfortunate event transpired. The inquest shed light on the circumstances surrounding the discovery of Mr. Burton by two passers-by underneath the Audi A3, prompting them to raise the alarm.
During the proceedings, Detective Constable Kelly Hurley disclosed that Mr. Burton’s partner had advised against him conducting the car repairs due to the scale of the task and the diminishing daylight. A neighbor, who observed him working on the vehicle, contemplated cautioning him regarding the precarious nature of the setup, given that the car was parked on a slant. Despite this, the neighbor refrained from intervening, fearing that Mr. Burton might not have been receptive to the advice offered. The account of the incident revealed that it was only around 18:30 GMT that two women looking for their stolen car noticed Mr. Burton pinned beneath the car he had been attending to, prompting immediate action to extricate him from the perilous situation. The emergency services were summoned, and despite efforts to save him, Mr. Burton was declared deceased by a paramedic at 18:53 GMT. Subsequent investigations found no foul play, with a post-mortem indicating that Mr. Burton’s demise was a result of traumatic asphyxia, also referred to as crush asphyxia.
