New food allergies: Pine nuts can make the list, say experts

Experts are suggesting that more food items like pine nuts and goat’s milk should come with warning labels due to the frequency of allergic reactions. While common allergens like egg, peanuts, and sesame are already listed on food packaging in the UK and EU, researchers believe at least four more allergens should be added to the mandatory risk list. Dr Dominique Sabouraud-Leclerc from the Allergy Vigilance Network emphasized the need to review the current list of foods with mandatory labels and consider adding the most severe emerging food allergens.

The recommended foods that the researchers believe should be added to the list now include goat or sheep milk, buckwheat, peas and lentils, and pine nuts. Additionally, emerging allergens to keep an eye on are alpha-gal found in red meat, kiwi, beehive products like wax and pollen, and apples. The suggestion to update the list comes from experts who analyzed food-induced anaphylaxis cases reported in Europe between 2002-2023, as anaphylaxis is a serious and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction.

In their analysis of nearly 3,000 cases, the researchers found that 413 were caused by one of the eight emerging food allergies, including two deaths. The top four new allergens based on frequency, severity, recurrence, and potential for hidden exposure are goat’s and sheep’s milk, buckwheat, peas and lentils, and pine nuts. If added to the list, they would join the current 14 mandatory allergens such as gluten, peanuts, and shellfish. The Food Standards Agency emphasizes the importance of clear ingredient labeling to help consumers with allergies identify potential risks.

Allergy UK is advocating for full ingredient labeling on all food products while staying vigilant of emerging allergens. The charity recently issued advice regarding pea allergies, as pea protein is increasingly being added to various foods where it may not be expected. They have also expressed concerns about the lack of clear and accurate labeling on platforms like TikTok Shop. Consumers are advised to be cautious and always check the label for allergen information to ensure their safety
