Huge fire at abandoned Woolton Hall mansion in Liverpool

A large fire has broken out at an abandoned 18th-century manor house in Liverpool, known as Woolton Hall. The historic Grade I-listed building, constructed in 1704, has previously served various purposes such as a hotel, an army hospital, a convent, and a school before falling into disrepair in recent years.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) responded to the blaze on Speke Road in Woolton at 20:16 BST. The firefighters have closed off surrounding roads as they work to contain the fire that has engulfed the two-storey manor house, causing its roof to collapse partially. Drone footage obtained by the BBC shows the extent of the flames consuming the building.

At the scene, MFRS deployed five fire engines and an aerial platform to combat the fire. A spokesperson for the fire service reported that the stone structure was completely engulfed by the blaze, which measured approximately 130ft by 100ft. Local residents have been advised to keep doors and windows closed due to the thick smoke generated by the fire.

This is not the first time Woolton Hall has experienced a fire incident; a similar incident was reported in 2019, which authorities treated as arson. Despite previous concerns raised by campaigners about potential future fires, firefighters were successful in preventing the complete destruction of the building during the previous incident. Merseyside Police are currently at the scene assisting with traffic management, and the public is advised to avoid the area to ensure their safety
