As the summer comes to an end, the StreetScene Parks and Green Spaces team in Liverpool has been busy hosting BioBlitz events across the city to record and learn about local wildlife. These events are like wildlife treasure hunts, encouraging participants to identify and document as many species as possible.
Using the iNaturalist app, participants can upload photos and sound clips of their sightings to help identify the species. This data is then shared with Merseyside BioBank to help safeguard green spaces, inform planning decisions, and support habitat protection. The information collected also contributes to the Liverpool City Region’s Local Nature Recovery Strategy and the Council’s Pollinator Strategy.
Through these BioBlitz events, a wide range of species have been discovered in Liverpool’s green spaces, from bees and butterflies to birds and wildflowers. The events provide an opportunity for people to connect with nature, learn about the habitats around them, and contribute to the protection and enhancement of the city’s natural environment.
So, next time you’re out in nature in Liverpool, consider participating in a BioBlitz event, snapping a photo, and logging your sightings to be a part of the city’s growing wildlife story
