A noticeable number of critically ill and injured Palestinian children, ranging from 30 to 50, are set to be transferred from Gaza to the UK for medical treatment in the near future, as per information obtained by the BBC. This initiative marks the first time children will be brought to the UK for treatment under a government-funded operation, which is being coordinated by the Foreign Office, Home Office, and Department of Health. The children to be evacuated will be chosen by the World Health Organization and will accompany family members to a third country, where biometric data will be collected.
The decision to evacuate these children to the UK comes after a group of 96 Members of Parliament penned a letter to the government, urging prompt action to bring sick and injured children from Gaza to the UK due to the dire situation affecting the healthcare system in Gaza. Previously, some children from Gaza had been privately brought to the UK for medical treatment through Project Pure Hope (PPH), but until now, the government had not carried out any evacuations of this nature during the conflict. Plans to bring more children to the UK for medical care have been advancing rapidly since early August, although the exact number of children involved and the transit country remain unspecified.
In light of the difficulties in repatriating children to Gaza after treatment, it is anticipated that some may enter the asylum system following the completion of their medical care. The ongoing conflict in Gaza, which began in October 2023, has resulted in the deaths and injuries of over 50,000 children, as reported by the UN agency Unicef. The UK government has been contributing funds to ensure that injured individuals from Gaza receive treatment in regional hospitals and has also collaborated with Jordan to deliver aid to the territory through airdrops.
Children brought to the UK under the government scheme will be cared for within the NHS. Efforts by a cross-party taskforce have been underway to establish a plan for the expedient evacuation of children from Gaza requiring urgent medical attention. Biometric checks are a prerequisite for both the children and their caregivers before they embark on the journey. Numerous severely ill Palestinians have been transported from Gaza to other nations since the commencement of the conflict, with over 180 adults and children having been relocated to Italy. The UN has highlighted widespread malnutrition in Gaza, cautioning about a potential famine crisis unfolding in the region. Israel has refuted claims of impediments to aid deliveries into Gaza, instead accusing the UN and other aid organizations of falling short in their delivery efforts. As per the health ministry under Hamas, more than 60,000 individuals have lost their lives in Gaza since the Israeli military offensive began, triggered by a Hamas-led assault on southern Israel in early October 2023, resulting in casualties and hostages
