A meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will include the presence of European leaders on Monday. This decision was made after Trump’s unsuccessful attempts to negotiate an end to the conflict in Ukraine with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska last Friday. Trump now aims to skip the ceasefire agreement in Ukraine in order to pursue a more permanent peace deal.
Among the European leaders set to join the meeting in Washington are British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and Nato Secretary-General Mark Rutte. Despite Trump’s initial focus on achieving a ceasefire in Ukraine before meeting Putin, he has now expressed his preference for proceeding directly to a peace agreement, citing that ceasefires often do not hold up over time.
Following the Trump-Putin meeting, Putin reportedly proposed a peace deal that involves Ukraine withdrawing from the Donetsk region of Donbas, in exchange for Russia freezing the front lines in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson. However, Ukraine’s president has previously rejected the idea of relinquishing control of Donbas, as it could potentially serve as a launching point for future Russian incursions. Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, stated that Russia had shown willingness to make concessions concerning territory and that discussions regarding the Donetsk region are set to take place soon.
