Fugitive Nicholas Rossi guilty of rape after extradition to US

Authors Jane MacSorley and Megan Bonar reported on the recent court case involving an American fugitive who attempted to evade the law by faking his death and fleeing to Scotland. Nicholas Rossi, who also goes by the name Nicholas Alahverdian, was found guilty of rape in the United States, despite his denial of all charges. The case in question pertains to an assault in Salt Lake County, with another trial for an alleged rape in Utah County scheduled for September. A jury of four men and four women deliberated for over eight hours before reaching a verdict, with Rossi set to be sentenced on 20 October.

The emotional toll of the trial was palpable as Rossi, once jovial with his legal team, displayed no reaction upon hearing the verdict. Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill commended the survivor for her courage in coming forward years after the attack, noting the strength required to face her attacker in court. The victim, known as MS, recounted meeting Rossi online, embarking on a relationship that turned controlling and abusive before culminating in the assault. The defense likened the case to a puzzle missing pieces, citing a lack of a complete picture.

Testimony from a second victim, referred to as KP, who accused Rossi of rape in Utah County shed further light on his alleged criminal acts. After an initial meeting on a social networking site, the relationship quickly soured when Rossi reportedly misused the victim’s credit card and then assaulted her. Rossi’s upcoming trial for the charges involving KP is expected to last two weeks. Born Nicholas Alahverdian in 1987, Rossi adopted the surname Rossi from his stepfather. He garnered attention in the UK after marrying Miranda in Bristol and attracting notice from authorities, ultimately leading to his arrest and extradition to the US in January 2024
