Kathryn Armstrong reports for BBC News that a recent survey conducted by the National Pharmacy Association (NPA) has revealed concerning statistics regarding the safety of pharmacies within the UK. According to the survey, around nine out of 10 pharmacies have seen an increase in incidents of shoplifting and aggression towards staff members in the past year. Additionally, 87% of pharmacies reported instances of intimidating behavior towards workers, with 22% stating that staff had been physically assaulted.
Henry Gregg, the head of the NPA, condemned these findings as “appalling.” The survey results come at a time when reports of shoplifting are on the rise across the wider retail sector in the UK. The government has expressed a zero-tolerance policy towards violence or harassment directed at NHS staff and community pharmacists. Additional measures, such as increased neighborhood patrols in more than 500 town centers, are being implemented to combat shop theft and related offenses.
Pharmacist Ashley Cohen from Leeds described witnessing a rise in criminal activity, including instances of vandalism and attempted break-ins at his pharmacies. The increase in crime not only impacts the safety of staff but also hinders patients’ access to healthcare services. Leyla Hannbeck, CEO of the Independent Pharmacies Association (IPA), highlighted the challenges faced by pharmacies in dealing with shoplifters and aggressive behavior. The NPA and IPA members have resorted to installing security measures such as CCTV, panic buttons, and security shutters to ensure the safety of their staff and customers.
The NPA has warned about the potential dangers of thieves stealing prescription medications, which could harm both themselves and others. Despite efforts by pharmacies to enhance security, Mr. Cohen emphasized the importance of faster police response times to provide better protection. Recent statistics from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed a concerning increase in shoplifting incidents, prompting calls for greater collaboration between businesses, law enforcement agencies, and the community to address this issue
