Bryson had been convicted of two counts of rape in 2023 for crimes committed in Clydebank and Glasgow in 2016 and 2019. Initially charged as Adam Graham, Bryson had identified as a woman during the trial and was remanded to a women’s prison before being moved to a men’s facility, leading to a policy change for transgender prisoners based on their birth sex.
The debate surrounding Scotland’s gender self-identification laws, which were blocked by the UK government, intensified during this time. Sturgeon acknowledged her role in the debate losing its rationality and expressed regret over not pausing the legislation. Criticism from SNP MSP Michelle Thomson and Scottish Tory leader Russell Findlay highlighted Sturgeon’s belated admission about the gender of convicted rapists and the consequences of her actions in the gender recognition bill discussions.
Reflecting on the 2014 Scottish independence referendum and her relationship with former mentor Alex Salmond, Sturgeon criticized Salmond’s lack of engagement with key governmental documents at the time.
