In Downpatrick, a priest is currently hospitalized with a “serious head injury” after being assaulted with a bottle at St Patrick’s Church prior to a Mass service on Sunday morning. The attack took place around 10:10 BST, when a man entered the church on St Patrick’s Avenue and struck the priest on the head with a bottle before fleeing the scene. The priest, identified as Fr Murray, is receiving medical treatment, as confirmed by a statement from the Downpatrick Family Of Parishes on social media. The community has been asked for their prayers and well wishes for Fr Murray’s recovery.
Det Ch Insp McBurney described the incident as a “completely shocking and brutal attack” that has left the priest with a severe head injury. Following the assault, the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) dispatched an emergency ambulance to the church, transporting the injured priest to the Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH) in Belfast for treatment. Police have reported that the priest’s condition is still deemed as “serious” as investigations into the attack continue.
