More than 400 migrants brought to shore at Dover

On Saturday, a total of 435 migrants in seven boats arrived at Dover, which marks the highest daily number since the initiation of the new “one in, one out” deal with France. These migrants, including some children, were brought to shore by Border Force and the RNLI amidst immigration protests happening across the UK. The National Crime Agency (NCA) also revealed its involvement in over 300 arrests of people smugglers in the past five years working jointly with French police.

Under the government’s “one in, one out” pilot, the UK can now return certain migrants arriving at Dover to France in exchange for receiving asylum seekers from France who have a legitimate claim to come to the UK. Although the numbers for this scheme are anticipated to be minimal initially, the first returns are scheduled to take place within a few weeks. Since the beginning of the year, more than 25,000 migrants have crossed the English Channel, putting pressure on the government regarding immigration policies and sparking protests and counter demonstrations outside hotels used to accommodate asylum seekers.

In the ongoing effort to combat organized immigration crime, the NCA highlighted the arrest of over 300 suspected people smugglers in the last five years through collaborations with French law enforcement. Notably, in July, six members of an Afghan smuggling network received lengthy prison sentences and substantial fines in France for their involvement in people smuggling. Rick Jones from the NCA emphasized the importance of the UK’s partnership with France in addressing the issue of people smuggling and protecting lives at risk during Channel crossings
