A young Palestinian student named Haia Mohammed, who was awarded a scholarship at Goldsmiths, University of London, finds herself trapped in Gaza unable to leave for the UK. Despite numerous endorsements from the university, British public, and 113 MPs, she remains stuck due to the inability to provide the biometric data required for her study visa processing. Haia’s struggle is part of a larger issue affecting more than 80 students in Gaza who face the same obstacle.
Before the war in Gaza, Haia, a 22-year-old student, excelled in her studies, graduating with flying colors. However, the destruction caused by the conflict hampered her education path, forcing her to resort to limited online learning. The destruction of specialized equipment crucial for her course further hindered her progress, leaving her with no means to continue her academic journey.
Despite facing numerous challenges and being displaced multiple times throughout the conflict, Haia remains determined to pursue her studies. With a passion for poetry and a desire to tell the stories of her people, she sees education as a means of communication and survival for herself and her community. The UK Coalition for Gaza Students and supporters like Nora Parr advocate for the students’ right to education, urging the British government to intervene and facilitate their exit from Gaza for biometric processing in neighboring countries.
Barry Gardiner, along with other MPs, calls for biometric checks to be deferred to other countries due to the lack of facilities in Gaza. While the Home Office acknowledges the challenging situation in Gaza, they are committed to finding a solution for the affected students.
