Nicola Sturgeon denies 'conspiracy to destroy' Alex Salmond

Nicola Sturgeon, former first minister of Scotland, has rejected any claims of a conspiracy to ruin her mentor Alex Salmond. In an excerpt from her new memoir, published in the Sunday Times, Sturgeon accuses Salmond of not showing any remorse for his inappropriate behavior towards women. Salmond was cleared of 13 sexual offense charges in 2020, including attempted rape, but his lawyer admitted he could have been a better man during the trial. Salmond passed away from a heart attack in North Macedonia last October at the age of 69.

Sturgeon expressed in her memoir that she felt Salmond was more inclined to destroy the SNP than witness its success without him. She mentioned that he questioned the integrity of key Scottish democracy institutions like the government, police, and Crown Office, and continued to traumatize the women at the center of the allegations. Sturgeon described feeling shocked by the substance of the complaints against Salmond when he first informed her. She succeeded Salmond as SNP leader and first minister in 2014 until her resignation in March 2023.

Sturgeon spoke about the Scottish government’s flawed investigation into the complaints against Salmond, noting that a judicial review revealed it was unlawful, unfair, and showed apparent bias. She stated that Salmond spun messages exchanged among women complainers and SNP staff members as proof of a conspiracy to bring him down, which she deemed disgraceful. Sturgeon concluded that Salmond’s effort to distort and weaponize genuine shock or trauma hindered her ability to forgive him. She added that Salmond’s passing did not completely free her from the shadow he cast over her.

The extract from Sturgeon’s memoir sheds light on her arrest by police investigating the SNP’s finances as the worst day of her life. She describes how she felt utter disbelief when her home with husband Peter Murrell was raided by police in April 2023. Following her exoneration, Sturgeon and Murrell separated, with Murrell facing charges of embezzlement. The former SNP leader also discusses her experience of suffering a miscarriage and shares her views on sexuality, emphasizing that she does not view it in binary terms
