The M6 motorway in Staffordshire was forced to close due to an overturned lorry that spilled diesel on the road. The incident took place shortly after 22:00 BST on Friday, impacting the northbound carriageway between junction 14 for the A34 Stafford North and junction 15 for the A500 to Stoke-on-Trent. Staffordshire Police reported that the HGV collided with the nearside and central barriers before flipping over and leaking fuel.
Fortunately, there were no injuries as a result of the crash, and National Highways (NH) announced that lanes three and four were reopened with a reduced speed limit around midday. However, the motorway was expected to shut down again later for further clean-up efforts. Following the partial reopening, heavy delays of up to 90 minutes were experienced in the area.
NH confirmed that the overturned lorry had been removed, but lanes one and two would remain closed until a full closure could be implemented overnight for resurfacing work. Additionally, lane four on the southbound side was also closed due to the impact of the diesel spill. According to Dale Hipkiss from NH, the top layer of the road surface needed to be planed away due to extensive damage caused by the spilled fuel. He stated that a full repair would be conducted overnight to minimize disruption for road users
