BBC News’ Political Correspondent, Helen Catt, reported that Britain’s homelessness minister, Rushanara Ali, faced scrutiny after increasing the rent on a house she owns by a significant amount. The i Paper revealed that four tenants renting a property owned by Ali in East London were informed last November that their lease would not be renewed, resulting in a rent increase of £700 per month shortly after their departure.
As the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Homelessness and Rough Sleeping, Ali came under fire for allegedly hiking up the rent on her property while in a position of authority over housing matters. Despite backlash, a spokesman for Ali stated that she had followed all legal obligations in the situation, indicating that it was a fixed-term contract and the property was put up for sale while the tenants resided there.
The controversy surrounding Ali’s actions prompted calls for her resignation from various political figures, including the SNP’s depute leader at Westminster, Pete Wishart, and Conservative MP Ben Obese-Jecty. However, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper defended Ali, stating that she had abided by the regulations. Ali’s parliamentary register of interests showed that she owned three properties in London, one of which was co-owned with a family member.
The government’s Renters’ Rights Bill is currently in its final stages in Parliament and aims to introduce measures such as banning landlords from re-listing a property for six months after ending a tenancy to sell it. The bill also seeks to eliminate fixed-term tenancies and require a landlord to provide four months’ notice if they wish to regain possession of a property for sale. With the majority of tenants in England on assured shorthold tenancies, the bill aims to address issues around evictions, including ‘no-fault’ evictions, which have seen a decrease in instances according to Ministry of Justice data
