Rayner asks China to explain redacted mega-embassy plans

Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner has issued an ultimatum to China, demanding an explanation for the redacted portions of their new mega-embassy plans in London. The Ministry of Housing, Communities, and Local Government has set a deadline of 20 August for a response from Beijing, concerned about potential security risks associated with the embassy’s location near the financial district.

Residents in the vicinity of the proposed embassy have voiced worries about espionage risks and the potential for large-scale protests. There are also concerns raised by opponents that the embassy’s proximity to London’s financial hub could allow China to access sensitive data through fiber optic cables. Additionally, pro-democracy activists from Hong Kong fear that the embassy could be used for suppressing dissent and detaining political opponents.

Shadow National Security Minister Alicia Kearns criticized the Labour party for rushing to accommodate China’s demands for a new embassy, highlighting the need for vigilance in ensuring the safety of British citizens. China’s response to security concerns emphasized their commitment to fostering friendly relations between the Chinese and British people through the development of mutually beneficial cooperation.

Despite a previous rejection of the Chinese embassy application by Tower Hamlets Council, China resubmitted an identical proposal in August 2024, shortly after Labour came into power. The complex, purchased for £255m in 2018, is set to become the largest embassy in Europe.
