An Airbnb host in Manchester shocked two women, Jemma Louise Gough, 38, and Jamie Lee Watkins, 37, from Wales, by rejecting their booking request. The friends had planned a stay in Manchester to attend a gig featuring Australian DJ Sonny Fodera at the Co-op Live Arena in November. Despite informing the host of their Welsh origin, the payment was refunded, and the booking request was declined without explanation.
The bewildered guests reached out to the host for a reason, only to receive a blunt response: “Because you’re from Wales.” This blatant discrimination prompted Airbnb to take action, suspending the host pending an investigation. The company emphasized that discrimination has no place on their platform.
Jemma shared her disbelief and disappointment on BBC Radio Wales Breakfast, expressing how unwelcome and alienated she felt due to her nationality. The friends were particularly puzzled as the host in question held a coveted “superhost” status, known for impeccable ratings and guest interactions. Despite previous positive reviews from guests worldwide, including those from Wales, the discriminatory treatment left Jemma and Jamie seeking answers.
As the friends pursued Airbnb for clarification, Jemma highlighted the need to address and combat discrimination in all its forms. The company responded promptly to the incident, offering support to the affected guests and launching an investigation while assuring that such behavior would not be tolerated on their platform
