A tragic incident occurred when Tetiana Martynova, a Ukrainian refugee who had fled the Russian invasion, was struck by a car and killed while walking home from work in Swansea. Martynova, 40, had moved to the UK with her 13-year-old son in 2022 and was hit by a vehicle on Neath Road, Morriston, after finishing her shift on January 31, 2024. Sadly, she suffered a catastrophic brain injury and passed away on February 1 at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.
The driver of the car, Jamie Hitchings, a Tata steelworker, stated that he had not seen Martynova, who was wearing all black and crossing an area of the road that was not well-lit, until just before the collision. Hitchings tried to assist Martynova after the incident by blocking off the road with cones and attempting to communicate with her. South Wales Police found that only one street light was illuminated in the area, and poor visibility due to rain, darkness, and the location of the road may have contributed to the tragic accident.
Colleagues and friends of Martynova described her as a warm and engaging individual who was well-liked by her employers at RunTech. She had plans to eventually return to Ukraine and had been praised for her conscientiousness and road safety awareness. The hosts who welcomed Martynova and her son to the UK expressed their devastation at her untimely passing, highlighting her generous nature and positive impact on those around her. Assistant coroner Paul Bennett concluded that the cause of Martynova’s death was a result of a road traffic collision, noting the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Although Martynova’s life was cut short in this tragic accident, the memories of her kind spirit and dedication to her work will live on among those who knew her. The loss of such a beloved individual serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and vigilance, both for pedestrians and drivers alike. The community mourns the passing of Tetiana Martynova, a Ukrainian refugee who sought safety and opportunity only to meet an untimely end on the streets of Swansea
