Cornwall resident Molly Earl has taken on the task of rescuing swarms of bees that would otherwise be exterminated by pest controllers. Growing up catching honey bee swarms with her father, an amateur beekeeper, Earl developed a passion for protecting these important pollinators. As an adult, she founded Bees Off, a bee removal company, with the mission of saving honeybees across Cornwall.
Operating with a part-time team of five, Earl and her crew travel around Cornwall to rescue honeybees from various locations, including chimneys, rooftops, and even electricity substations. Despite the challenges of scaling buildings and using specialized equipment, Earl’s dedication to preserving the bee population has enabled her to establish 250 rescued hives in the St Austell region since 2020.
Earl’s approach to bee removal involves carefully identifying the colony’s location, using thermal and probe cameras to locate the bees. She then employs a ‘bee vac’ to safely transport the bees into a box for relocation. After rescuing the bees, Earl focuses on aftercare, ensuring the health and strength of the colony before relocating them to her apiaries. With a remarkable 98% survival rate for her rescued bees, Earl’s efforts have significantly contributed to bee conservation in Cornwall.
In addition to traditional beekeeping locations, Earl has encountered bees in unconventional places such as a hot tub pump and an electricity substation. Despite the challenging rescue operations, Earl emphasizes the importance of long-term care and ensuring the well-being of the rescued colonies. Her commitment to bee preservation has led her to establish new hives in various natural settings, expanding her impact on bee conservation in Cornwall
