In Newport, six men have pleaded not guilty to charges of violent disorder in the city, following an incident on Commercial Road. Gwent Police responded to the scene around 15:20 BST on Friday after reports of a group of men engaged in a fight which resulted in four individuals being hospitalized. The men, aged between 25 and 52, appeared in court separately and were all remanded in custody. Additionally, a 17-year-old from Newport who was arrested in connection with the altercation has been released on police bail.
During the initial court hearing, Mehmet Askoy, Murat Askoy, and Burak Askoy were accused of using or threatening unlawful violence in the presence of others, causing fear for safety. CCTV footage of the alleged incident was presented in court, with District Judge Sophie Toms emphasizing the seriousness of the charges. She noted that the event, described as a large-scale violent outbreak, stemmed from a dispute between two families, leaving witnesses frightened. The case was deemed too complex for the magistrates’ court and will be transferred to the crown court for further proceedings.
In a separate hearing involving Savas Sayak, Yagmur Sayak, and Firat Sayak, the seriousness of the case led to the decision to move proceedings to the crown court. Bail applications for Savas Sayak and Yagmur Sayak were denied, while Firat Sayak’s lawyer indicated intentions to apply for bail at the upcoming crown court session on 1 September. Furthermore, an additional 40-year-old man from Newport has been taken into police custody on suspicion of violent disorder.
The legal proceedings following the violent incident in Newport have shed light on the severity of the charges faced by the accused individuals. The gravity of the situation has prompted the movement of the cases to the crown court for further evaluation and potential trials. As the defendants await trial preparation, the focus remains on ensuring justice is served in relation to the alleged violent acts that took place on Commercial Road
