Man in court after children fell ill at Stathern summer camp

Jon Ruben, a 76-year-old man, has made a court appearance on child cruelty charges following an incident at a summer camp in Leicestershire. The arrest came as a result of a Leicestershire Police investigation after eight children and one adult at the camp at Stathern Lodge, Stathern, were hospitalized on Monday. Fortunately, all individuals have been discharged from the hospital.

Mr. Ruben, residing in Wayte Court, off Landmere Lane in Ruddington, Nottinghamshire, has been accused of three counts of wilful ill treatment of a child regarding three boys between July 25 and July 29. During a brief hearing at Leicester Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, the defendant, dressed in a grey tracksuit, did not enter a plea to the charges.

Following the court appearance, Jon Ruben was remanded in custody and is set to appear at Leicester Crown Court on August 29. Leicestershire Police received the initial report of unwell children at the summer camp on Sunday, leading to the hospitalization of eight boys aged between eight and 11, along with an adult, as a precautionary measure. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has announced an investigation into the police’s handling of the incident.

The incident at Stathern Lodge has raised concerns and brought attention to child welfare and safety in summer camps. The allegations against Jon Ruben have prompted further scrutiny and oversight into such facilities to ensure the well-being of children participating in these recreational activities. The upcoming court proceedings will shed more light on the situation and determine the next steps in this legal case
