It is clear that many Palestinians like Kamal are skeptical of the promises made by foreign leaders like Sir Keir Starmer when it comes to recognizing a Palestinian state. The actions of the Israeli government, particularly in expanding settlements in the West Bank, make it difficult for them to believe that real change will come from outside intervention.
For Kamal and others like him, the reality on the ground is what matters most. The presence of violent settlers, the fear of attacks on their homes and families, and the ongoing occupation by Israel are daily struggles that won’t simply disappear because of a diplomatic recognition of a state.
While gestures of support from countries like Britain are appreciated, what Palestinians truly need is a tangible shift in the situation on the ground. Without real pressure on Israel to abide by international law and respect the rights of Palestinians, promises of recognition can ring hollow.
Until then, the skepticism and fear felt by people like Kamal will continue to shape their views on the current political landscape and the prospects for a just and lasting peace in the region.
