Reform UK would have to do unpopular things, says policy guru

BBC Political reporter, Brian Wheeler, discussed how an incoming Reform UK government would need to implement tough measures to revive the economy. James Orr, the man behind a new pro-Reform think tank, emphasized that the party would have to take unpopular actions similar to US President Donald Trump’s swift policy implementations.

With Reform UK leading in opinion polls but only having four MPs currently, winning power in the upcoming election would be a substantial upset in British politics. Unlike established parties like the Conservatives and Labour, Reform lacks a detailed policy program and a network of policy experts to rely on. The Centre for a Better Britain (CBB), a pro-Reform think tank led by James Orr, was launched to develop well-thought-out policies.

In a discussion with the BBC, Orr highlighted the necessity for a costed and coherent policy framework if Reform were to govern successfully. He emphasized the importance of policies being aligned with a post-Brexit, pro-nation, pro-sovereignty, pro-Britain approach. While unsure about Reform UK’s ideology, Orr acknowledged Nigel Farage’s surprising welfarist stance on certain issues like welfare benefits.

Orr cautioned that Farage must be transparent with voters about the tough economic decisions ahead of the 2029 general election. If Reform forms the government, Orr believes they will have more autonomy than traditional parties due to their newness and lack of internal factions. The initial days in power will be crucial for implementing necessary but unpopular measures to jumpstart economic growth
