In the wake of allegations that South Yorkshire Police officers sexually abused children in Rotherham, the shadow home secretary has called for an independent investigation into the matter. Conservatives Chris Philp and shadow safeguarding minister Alicia Kearns have expressed concerns that the police force should not be involved in investigating themselves, to ensure impartiality and independence. One woman shared her harrowing testimony, revealing that she was raped by a serving SYP officer in a marked police car starting at the age of 12. The former Her Majesty’s Inspector of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue, the Hon ZoĆ« Billingham CBE, also echoed these sentiments, calling for an independent investigation to be conducted promptly.
While South Yorkshire Police have emphasized their commitment to putting victims and survivors at the forefront of the investigation, concerns persist about their ability to objectively handle the case.
