A vigil is set to take place in County Clare on Sunday for Vanessa Whyte, her daughter Sara, and her son James, who tragically lost their lives in a suspected triple murder and attempted suicide in County Fermanagh. The family, originally from Barefield, County Clare, was fatally shot at their home in Maguiresbridge earlier in the week. The prayer service will be held at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in the village at 19:00 BST.
The incident occurred in a rural area not far from Enniskillen, around 75 miles west of Belfast. Two of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while the third tragically passed away in the hospital. A male member of the household is currently receiving treatment at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast for serious gunshot wounds. Authorities have not made any arrests, and the investigation is still in its early stages, with a suspected triple murder and attempted suicide under scrutiny.
The late Vanessa Whyte, a skilled veterinary surgeon, was employed by the Department of Agriculture, Environment, and Rural Affairs (Daera) in Stormont. Prior to that, she dedicated eight years of service to Lakeland Vets in Derrygonnelly, County Fermanagh. Described as an “enthusiastic, hard-working colleague” and a “devoted mum” to her children, Sara and James, both of whom were active members of local Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) teams and Enniskillen Cricket Club. A book of condolences was opened at Maguiresbridge Primary School, where the children previously attended.
Enniskillen Royal Grammar School, where Sara and James were students, also opened its doors for staff and pupils to grieve and share memories of the beloved siblings. Principal Elizabeth Armstrong expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the vibrant and intelligent young pair, noting how full of life they were. Additionally, St. Joseph’s Doora-Barefield GAA Club shared their shock and sadness at the news of the tragedy, highlighting the family’s longstanding connection to the club and Vanessa’s prowess as a camogie player
