A man has been given a prison sentence for selling counterfeit halal meat to restaurants and takeaways in south Wales. Helim Miah, the 46-year-old owner of Universal Food Wholesale Limited, was found guilty after a trial earlier this year and was sentenced to four years and eight months for fraudulent trading and trading whilst bankrupt. Additionally, Noaf Rahman, also 46 and from Cardiff, admitted to the fraudulent trading offences and was given a 24-month suspended sentence.
The fraudulent activity was uncovered following an investigation that resulted in the seizure of 2,840kg of frozen meat from the warehouse in Cardiff. Prosecutor Alex Greenwood revealed that over a five-year span, consumers were unknowingly served non-halal products as a result of the criminal actions of these two individuals. The investigation conducted by Cardiff and the Vale Shared Regulatory Services in January 2019 exposed inadequate traceability of the meat, tampering with sell-by dates, and improper storage of chicken in dirty vans across various regions.
Although some of the chicken was initially purchased as halal meat, the correct hygiene protocols were not followed during processing at the warehouse. This led to the mingling of non-halal meat with the halal products, rendering all meat inaccurate for halal designation. Judge Vanessa Francis commented on the pair’s irresponsible behavior, noting their “cavalier attitude” and significant breaches over an extended period. She emphasized the extensive harm caused by their actions and expressed relief that no unsafe meat reached consumers due to their deceptive practices.
